Energy Bolting manufacture fasteners and machined components to MOD (Ministry of Defence) DEF STAN 02-862 Part 3 Issue 3
The complete Def Stan 02-862 Issue 3 comprises:
Part 1: Naval Fasteners - Material Selection and Use
Part 2: Naval Fasteners - Procurement of Non-First Level Fasteners
Part 3: Naval Fasteners - Procurement of First Level Fasteners
First Level items comply with the requirements of SSP 25 which gives the following definition: Where the consequences of failure of a hull area, system, equipment or component are such that it would lead to loss of the submarine, or potentially the loss of fission products, these areas, systems, equipments or components will be classified FIRST LEVEL and additional Quality Assurance measures will be implemented.
For First Level carbon and low alloy steel fasteners a series of three standard grades has been developed for metric and unified threaded steel bolts, screws, studs, studbolts and nuts (including prevailing-torque type nuts for SM1-M and SM1-U grades only).
The following three grades of metric fastener and three grades of unified fastener are available: 1) SM1-M Submarine Grade 1 – Metric (abbreviated to SM1-M) for zinc-plated fasteners from 6 mm to 48 mm thread diameter for use where the temperature will be less than 60°C.
2) SM2-M Submarine Grade 2 – Metric (abbreviated to SM2-M) for unplated fasteners from 6 mm to 48 mm thread diameter for use where the temperature will be less than 300°C.
3) SM3-M Submarine Grade 3 – Metric (abbreviated to SM3-M) for unplated fasteners from 6 mm to 48 mm thread diameter for use where the temperature will range between 0°-520°C.
4) SM1-U Submarine Grade 1 – Unified (abbreviated to SM1-U) for zinc-plated fasteners from 1/4 inch to 2 inch thread diameter for use where the temperature will be less than 60°C.
5) SM2-U Submarine Grade 2 – Unified (abbreviated to SM2-U) for unplated fasteners from 1/4 inch to 2 inch thread diameter for use where the temperature will be less than 300°C.
6) SM3-U Submarine Grade 3 – Unified (abbreviated to SM3-U) for unplated fasteners from 1/4 inch to 2 inch thread diameter for use where the temperature will range between 0°-520°C.
